Heliconia Sparrow

Found in the tropics, the heliconia plant features a very exotic looking bloom. In contrast, the common sparrow is found throughout the world. This juxtaposition of exotic and common makes Heliconia Sparrow uniquely interesting and beautiful. The heliconia is hammered and welded of bronze and steel, and the sparrow is hand-carved from black acacia. The man who commissioned this piece gave it to his wife in celebration of their fortieth wedding anniversary. The subject matter is significant: they once encountered a friendly sparrow while visiting Hawaii.
