Hermit Crab Sculpture

A strange growth on a piece of shihuahuaco wood from the Peruvian Amazon inspired this piece. The growth, resembling a sea anemone, was left in its natural state while the rest was carved into a shell. The crab itself was forged and welded of bronze. All hermit crabs use found shells as makeshift houses. Some species of hermit crab will “decorate” their shells with sea anemones that are sometimes larger than the crab itself. All of this is carried by the crab wherever it goes. Fashion has its cost.
